AI Can Write the Post. It Can’t Close the Deal.
There’s a line between what AI does well and what only a person can do.
Most people don’t know where that line is yet. After closing deals for over 15 years, I do.
AI is genuinely useful for the content side of this business. Blog posts, outreach drafts, market summaries, follow-up templates. It can organize what I know, put it into a format that reaches people, and do it faster than I can on my own. I use it for that. It works and is fantastic.
But here’s the thing: a blog post doesn’t close a domain deal. Neither does a perfectly written cold email.
What closes a deal is a real conversation. A phone call where someone hears in your voice that you’ve done this before and you know what you’re doing. A Zoom where you can actually read the room, slow down on the question that’s really the sticking point, and make the other person feel confident they’re in good hands. A text back at 9pm because the buyer just got spooked and needs someone to actually pick up.
That part? AI doesn’t have it.
I’ve watched deals fall apart over tone or an attitude that a seller or buyer had. Not price, not terms. Tone. Someone sent a templated email at the wrong moment, the seller felt like a number, and the whole thing fell through.
The way I think about it, AI helps me show up better prepared, faster, with more content visible and more information organized. It extends what I can do alone. It doesn’t replace the thing that actually makes this business work, which is trust and relationships.
Trust is built call by call. Deal by deal. Meeting by meeting. Relationship by relationship.
There are deals I’ve done because someone picked up the phone and said “I need this handled quietly.” They didn’t search for a blog post. They asked for a referral and was sent in my direction. That’s still how the big ones happen. One of my favorite intros ever in Las Vegas after losing at a craps table.
So yes, I use AI tools. I’d be leaving capacity on the table if I didn’t. But I’m deliberate about where it ends and where I start. The content, the research, the first draft: AI. The actual negotiation, the client relationship, the moment where the deal either lives or dies, that’s personal.
You can’t automate the part that matters most.
